Growing older can be scary. Our bodies start to fail us and, for some people, our minds start to fail us as well. For many people, Alzheimer’s disease is one of the scariest things they can imagine. What would your life be like if you couldnt remember who your husband or your kids are? How scary is it to know that you are having trouble remembering these basic details of your life? The “good” news is that only a very small percentage of people actually get Alzheimers disease specifically even though many people experience some sort of cognitive decline.
Thankfully there are many groups working to help people deal with the memory loss they may experience as they age. The solutions they are working on range from aging technology designed to track when people come and go from their homes to how they are taking their medications to systems designed to allow family or caregivers to check in on the person. There are even devices being designed to look at how people are sleeping (including tracking changes in weight that can allow people to detect a problem with eating or an increase in fluid retention).
Not every solution being developed will be needed by everyone, but having a variety of tools that can be available as people need them is important. If I am taking some crucial medication, but starting to have trouble with my memory, it would be important for me to have fairly accurate tracking of if Im taking my medication and the ability for someone to follow up with me if it looks like Im not taking my medication properly. On the other hand, some people take no medications, but might just need some crafty ways for their family to be able to look in on them, despite the fact that they travel a lot or live across the country.
